Merry Christmas

What a celebratory year it has been with the Diamond Jubilee, Olympics and Paralympics. It has perhaps been the best year of sport we have ever witnessed…and the year has ended on a high with Wills and Kate announcing her pregnancy.

Looking back over the year, we felt it was only right to highlight our five favourite bits.

1. On 6 February 2012, The Queen became only the second British Monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. An estimated 90,000 people attended the Diamond Jubilee Festival in Battersea Park and watched the Thames Pageant from there. Crowds in central London were estimated to number 1.2 million people even though it was raining!

2. The Olympics – More than a billion people tuned in to watch daredevil Gary Connery’s historic parachute jump into the Olympic Park dressed as the Queen at the climax of Danny Boyle’s spectacular opening ceremony. And who could forget Mo Farah’s now famous “mobot” pose, which became one of the most enduring images of the Games

3. Andy Murray won the US open – hooray and also reached the Wimbledon final and won Olympic gold this summer. Andy is e first British man to win a Grand Slam title in 76 years.

4. Barack Obama was returned to the White House on November 7, despite lingering dissatisfaction with the economy and a hard-fought challenge by his Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

5. Children in Need raised a record £26.7 million in one night after a six-hour telethon. About 20 of Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic stars also got in on the action in a special music video; among them was Zara Phillips’ Olympic 3 Day Eventing team dancing Gangnam Style in a special video!

We’d love to hear your favourite bits from 2012, please tweet us @GaltToys or upload you favourite memories to our Facebook page.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas from all of us here at Galt Toys

A Right Royal Mystery

Children have no idea what the Queen does all day!

The majority of children know what the Jubilee is but 70 per cent of them have no idea what the Queen does all day.

In fact if children had one question they could ask the Queen, “What do you do all day?” closely followed “What is it like being Wueen?” as the most common thing they wanted to know.

According to nearly 3 in 10 children from schools across the UK, the Queen spends her days sitting on her throne, relaxing or watching television.

Research conducted for Galt Toys by leading child research experts ChildWise, found that school children had varied views about the Queen’s average day. Suggestions range from drinking tea all day and playing with corgis, to the more unlikely ideas such as playing compuer games, polishing her crown and diamonds, counting her money and chewing bubblegum. Others viewed her as a more traditional grandmother figure, knitting, gardening, cleaning her kitchen and looking after her grandchildren.

Mystery also surrounds what the Queen carries in her handbag. She actually carries a handkerchief, lipstick, tiny mirror and a copy of the day’s programme in her bag but 43 per cent of children thought she would carry a mobile phone. Other suggestions included an extra crown, and 3 per cent of children even thought she’d carry a dog or a gun. Wet wipes, pepper spray and bars of gold were also suggested.

John McDonnell, Managing Director at Galt Toys, said: “It is wonderful that children have such enthusiasm for the Diamond Jubilee but given how hard the Queen works it is interesting that the majority of children felt being Queen is a relaxing occupation. It is clear that there is still an air of mystery surrounding the Royal family for the younger generations.”

16 per cent of children think the Queen has a different crown for every day of the week, and 27 per cent think it is kept in a box on top of her wardrobe. The majority of children(68%) agree that the Queen has someone whose sole job it is to look after her crowns.

The Alternative Queen’s Speech

Galt Toys asked 650 school children, aged 6 – 12 years, across the UK for one Royal Proclamation they’d like to make legislative if they were King or Queen for a day! We received a whole heap of weird and wonderful answers and have chosen the most frequently reported to be written up into Galt Toys Alternative Queen’s Speech.
