So… who is St. David and what is St. David’s Day?

St David is the patron saint of Wales. People in Wales and those of Welsh origin celebrate the life of their patron saint by pinning a daffodil or leek to their clothes and some, especially children, wear traditional costumes.

St David plays a very important role in Welsh culture but little is known about his life; it is claimed he lived for over 100 years and died on Tuesday, March 1, 589, but the first texts on his life only appeared around five hundred years after his death. So, it is difficult to tell which aspects of the St David’s story are true and which are legend.

If you’ve got some amazing St. David’s facts – we’d love to hear from you, please leave your facts in the comment box below…

Galt’s Guide to February’s Half-Term

Stuck for ideas for half-term? Whether your kids are into piglets, princesses or the prehistoric you will find something fab and free within Galt’s Activity Zone.

Princesses to Be!

Speculation on just who will design Kate Middleton’s wedding dress has been rife during London Fashion Week and with only 97 days to go until Kate’s Special day we have created a Royal Wedding Scrapbook. Girls will love the fairy-tale wedding pages where they can report on the wedding arrangements for Prince William and Kate Middleton and create their very own memento of this special occasion.

From Princesses to Pigs!

There have been many famous pigs; Miss Piggy from the Muppets has to be the most famous with her voluptuous body, long fluttery eyelashes!  We love A. A. Milne’s Piglet for his nervous disposition and for being Winnie-the-Pooh’s best friend.

Miss Piggy from the Muppets

And whose heartstrings haven’t been tugged by the courageous Babe on his adventures …There is also Porky Pig, Toot and Puddle, Pumbaa (perhaps more of a hog!), Wilbur from Charlottes Webb, Hamm from Toy Story and the Three Little Pigs….the list is pig-endless.

So we thought it was about time the kids got into a ‘piggy-mess’  by having a go at creating their own famous Pet Pig out of Papier Mache.  Download the template via our website for the pig’s legs, ears, snout and tail, and use an inflated balloon for his body. Add layers of Paper Mache from pieces of newspaper dipped in glue.

Oink, Oink! Make Your Own Pet Piggy!

When dry, they’ll have a hard but lightweight pig to decorate with paint. This activity is suitable for children aged 7 years and up and it’s a great way to recycle newspapers! When finished, why not upload your Make & Do photos to our Facebook page….we’d love to see how you get on.

Prehistoric Grow your own Stalactites and Stalagmites! Stalactites and stalagmites are formed when rain drips through limestone caves over thousands of years. And of course you know the difference…? The stalactite is above and hangs downward like an icicle; the stalagmite is below and sticks up.  With our fun geology experiment your kids can watch these grow in their own homes! To get started, just download the easy to follow instructions and find the simple household items needed.

Slimy Slime What could be more fun for kids this half-term than making their very own icky Slime! Slime is both solid and liquid and we have created a gooey experiment for budding scientists! To make your own slippery slime, simply download the easy to follow instructions via our Activity Zone.  All the ingredients are common household items, but remember it can be MESSY so it’s a good idea to do it over a bath or sink…. the slime is definitely NOT to be eaten!

Lava Lamp Edward Craven Walker invented the lava lamp in 1948 and perfected his invention for mass production in 1963 when their groovy, psychedelic properties grew in popularity.  So 48 years on we have designed a great experiment for your children to make your own gloopy lava lamp at home.  Once again simply download the easy to follow instructions via our Activity Zone and have Lava-ly fun!

Love is in air…. everywhere I look… especially in the Playnest

The history of Valentine’s Day and its patron saint is shrouded in mystery, but we do know that February has long been a month of romance.

St. Valentine’s Day, celebrated every February 14, contains snippets of both Christian and ancient Roman traditions and now all around the world  flowers, chocolates,  gifts and cards are sent to loved ones all in the name of St. Valentine.

It’s estimated that 141 millions Valentine cards are exchanged annually, making it the second most popular card-sending day after Christmas!

It would also appear that when it comes to the soundtrack of LOVE, there’s one song that stands out above all the others – Bleeding Love, by X Factor winner Leona Lewis – apparently the most played love song of the last decade! And Bruce Willis has recently been voted the top Valentine dream date…

With ‘love’ in the air and sending us cuckoo we thought we’d bring you back to the one love we all understand  – the bond between parent and child.

Scientific evidence shows that the way babies are cared for by their parents will determine not only their emotional development, but their biological development.

According to Alan Schore, Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA School of Medicine, the infant brain is designed to be moulded by the environment it encounters.

In other words, babies are born with a certain set of genetics, but they must be activated by early experience and interaction. Schore believes the most crucial component of these earliest interactions is the primary caregiver – the mother.

So we have been asking some of you for your tips on how to stop your baby from crying…

Penni from Manchester told us on Facebook – The only ‘tip’ any mother should be given is ‘Trust Your Own Instincts’ no website, book, or other mother knows your child, only you do. Love your baby, hold your baby, and trust your own instincts!

@pink_baybee from Bedfordshire tweeted – A good cuddle and stroke their cheek…or a little song!

@reaw tweeted - Distraction always works!

It’s obvious to see that communication and stimulation are key to taking those tears away. Here at James Galt we are always designing toys to meet the needs of all stages of child development from 0-10 years. Our products are designed to be fun and to encourage learning through play.

Our innovative Playnest is a self-contained play environment for babies and toddlers. The triangular fabric covered inflatable ring provides additional sideways support for baby during rest and play.

Award-winning Playnest

Around the Playnest, there are 8 multi-sensory features to stimulate touch, vision and hearing – providing the early experience and interaction a baby needs.

This week we are giving one Playnest away – for your chance to win please subscribe to our blog.
